How to Properly Brake
- Avoid abrupt and sudden braking unless absolutely necessary
- For general riding, slowly pull back on the brake to gradually come to a complete stop
- Keep in mind, brake time and distance are different for every rider and terrain
- While braking downhill, brake in intervals and carve left and right to ease tension on the strain of power, this will also make the ride smoother and be a little safer than a straight line, risking injury if one fishtails (speed wobbles)
- While braking, slightly lean back to compensate for the change in forward momentum
- Please remember, you are still not a part of the board, so hard braking or not compensating for the change of speed, your body plus forward momentum will cause you to lean forward and possibly fall if not considered
Prioritizing Safety on an Electric Skateboard
In addition to understanding the proper braking techniques, there are other important safety measures to keep in mind while riding an electric skateboard. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe:
-
-
Wear Protective Gear: Wearing a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards can help protect you in case of an accident.
-
Obey Traffic Laws: Electric skateboards are considered vehicles and must abide by the same traffic laws as bicycles. This means riding in the same direction as traffic and using designated bike lanes when available.
-
Stay Alert: Avoid distractions while riding, such as using your phone or listening to music at a high volume. Stay focused on your surroundings and be prepared to brake at any moment.
-
Maintain Your Skateboard: Regularly check your skateboard for any damage or wear and tear, and replace parts as needed to ensure it is in good working condition.
